Have you ever been told that you can’t do something, and it just makes you want to do it all the more?

If you answered yes, then pull up a chair, my friend, and I will tell you how this blog began.

I am Sam.  No matter how hard I try to be a Samantha, I always end up Sam.  By day I am an academic success coach, life coach and instructor at a local college.  By night (and maybe Fridays and weekends,) I am a mom to two fantastically challenging, yet irresistibly adorable, kidlets, aged 4 & 1.  I am also a wife to an incredible man, who just so happens to live on hot dogs and hamburgers.  Oh, the irony.

What is this health blog about, you ask? And so the story begins…

It was grade 10, and I was being forced to run 20km. (Okay, maybe it was 2, but it felt like a lot more).

Force = having to pass PE 10 to graduate + having to do 6 runs to pass PE 10

Unless I didn’t want to graduate, I was going to run.  I probably would have opted for appendicitis, but since my organs refused to cooperate, I was left with only one option: walk 1.9km and run the last.1 km.

 Paradigm shift

I teased my PE teacher that I was going to get a ride part way.  He retorted that if I didn’t come in last, he would know that I cheated.  Burn.

‘Sam, you can’t run.’   Pardon me?

And that is how it began. As an act of rebellion, I began to get fit.  In my twenties, I started to question why I didn’t see myself as healthy and made a startling discovery.  I first thought that I wasn’t fit when I couldn’t catch my brother when we played tag…WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD!  He is two years older than me and a boy, but due to the spectacular reasoning of a 4 year old, I decided it was because I wasn’t good at running.

It wasn’t until my twenties that I realized that I had conformed to a belief that a 4 year old made.

I came across your site via (in)courage newsletter I get in my email. I often think holistic means the “whole body” which would also include our emotional and mental health, as well. How to be wholly well. That’s a tough one because we get bombarded with so much negativity which affects our physical health. I have always wanted to be really healthy and I am trying to do this slowly. I really, really need to exercise regularly. It’s too blazing hot in Arizona right now to go outside so I have to stay inside and do it. I have changed my eating habits drastically. I am a vegetarian who has also eliminated gluten and most dairy from her diet. The vegetarian thing is new. I’ve only been at it a few months. But I need a more holistic approach to accomplishing this project on myself, too.

Well I think you are in the right place because health is about mind, body, & spirit, but we often only address the physical. It is my hope to build a community of encouragers, so that we can learn from each other and support each other’s goals. Whether it is to get more exercise (or come up with exercise ideas for hot weather) or lower stress, I believe this can be a team effort.

My quest for better heatlth, like most, started with addressing my diet. I have also recently drastically reduced gluten and almost eliminated dairy from my diet (still a sucker for cheeses). But I have tried to always be aware of how those changes are affecting by body and energy levels.
Looking forward to how HHB can assist me here Sam. Can’t wait to see/share some recipes!
Christine: If your new diet seems to be helping you, persevere. If not, you may be O+ (like myself) and require lots of meat/protein. I just have to be smarter about the kinds, cuts, amounts and quality of meat that I consume.
Here’s to healthier living.

I agree that diet is a huge part of health. That is where I started and continue to make small changes. I am also seeing a huge link between thinking and health. I have become very curious about the correlation.
I would love some of your yummy recipes!
